ARTIST STATEMENT

A small handful of colors seemed as if they glowed from within.
My vivid memories of growing up in southern California drive much of the imagery in my work.  Having spent many of my teenage years on—or in—the ocean, I am particularly drawn to subjects containing a body of water and the mystery of what lies beyond.

When I was doing a lot of color consulting, I noticed that many paints looked flat—dull and lifeless—no matter what the hue.  I noticed that a small handful seemed rich and complex, as if they glowed from within.  In studying color, I learned that the full spectrum is most appealing, and I concluded that this was the foundation of the rich colors.

As a self-taught artist working in acrylics, I achieve this luminosity using several methods. I tend to mix full-spectrum hues. Sometimes I layer one transparent color over another in glazes so that multiple colors are visible at once. Or I use opposite colors, which comprise the full spectrum.

When considering a subject, I like to isolate objects, like puddles or trees, and to locate them in some extreme way on the canvas to create broad contrasts of area.
I often include only what’s necessary to let the eye read the subject, allowing the viewer to fill in details from his or her own experience.

My studio is right off the living room of my Mill Valley home, ready when inspiration strikes, where a bank of greenhouse windows provides wonderful natural light and offers an expansive view of the ever-changing colors of the wetlands at the edge of Richardson Bay.
